Is risk of wheat shortage looming in country?

Sufficient wheat stocks are currently available in all provinces to meet national consumption requirements until the arrival of the new crop.

Pakistan faces no risk of a wheat shortage, and coordinated measures have been implemented to ensure a continuous supply across all markets.

This was revealed in the 6th meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.

Provinces share updates on their respective procurement strategies

During the meeting, provinces provided updates on their respective wheat procurement strategies.

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has implemented a hybrid procurement model, with 75% handled by the public sector and 25% by the private sector, aimed at improving efficiency and market responsiveness.

The Government of Sindh informed the Committee that wheat procurement will be conducted entirely through the public sector to maintain supply stability and manage prices effectively.

Wheat procurement price

The Committee was further informed that the indicative wheat procurement price has been set at Rs. 3,500 per 40 kilograms, and provinces have been guided to ensure the smooth implementation of procurement operations.

The Federal Minister highlighted that the current procurement framework will remain in effect for one year. He added that the Federal Government is developing a comprehensive long-term wheat policy for 2026–2030, aimed at strengthening national food security through modern reforms.

He noted that the upcoming policy will prioritise digital traceability, enhanced supply chain monitoring, greater transparency, and sustained price stability, facilitating improved coordination between federal and provincial authorities.
