The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has revealed early plans for a modern electric tram system in Islamabad, after instructions from the federal interior minister.
Officials say a feasibility study will be completed in the next three months. Additionally, the final proposal is expected to be included in the upcoming federal budget.
Islamabad electric tram key routes
According to initial plans, the tram will have two main routes. One is from Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park. It will connect major urban and recreational areas.
The other one is from Rawat to Lake View Park. It will link the suburban areas with the city centre.
Authorities expect the feasibility report to be ready by June.
The proposed electric tram system will be cashless. It will also feature digital ticketing and is designed to integrate with a planned glass train route to Murree.
Officials added that the tram will help ease traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions in Islamabad.
The project will also include tram depots and charging stations. The tendering and construction are expected to begin after the feasibility study is completed.
