ISLAMABAD: As the deadline to register M-tag has been extended in Islamabad, here’s an easy step-by-step guide for beginners.

The process does not require any complex papers. It’s way easier than you think. To register for an M-Tag, the residents of Islamabad need just two official documents.

  1. Vehicle Registration Card
  2. Vehicle owner’s CNIC

M Tag deadline extended

Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that the M-Tag has been granted a 15-day extension.

Prior to this, December 31st was the last day to register M-tag, as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi earlier announced that no vehicle will be allowed to enter Islamabad without the M-tag from January 1.

As per details, at present, 16 M-Tag issuance points have been set up at different locations across Islamabad. These points are working daily to register vehicles and issue electronic tags.

The administration said the number and distribution of points have been planned to cover all major sectors and approach roads, making access easier for residents and frequent visitors to the capital.

Since the launch of the process on November 14, nearly 100,000 vehicles have already been issued M-Tags.

Islamabad Traffic Police and district administration officials said the identification of non-M-Tag vehicles will be carried out through technology rather than routine stopping of vehicles. Tag readers have been installed at several entry points into the city as well as at selected checkpoints. Once a vehicle passes through these points, the system will detect whether an M-Tag is present.

Irfan Memon, while briefing on the implementation plan, said that as soon as the tag readers become fully active from January 1, action will start against vehicles without M-Tags. He explained that the system has already been tested and that staff have been trained to operate it in coordination with traffic and district authorities.

The M-Tag system is also expected to support law enforcement by providing digital records of vehicles entering and moving within the city. Authorities said this will help in monitoring traffic patterns and responding more effectively in case of violations or security concerns.

Entry banned in Islamabad without M-tag

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had announced that vehicles without an M-tag will be banned from entering Islamabad from 1st January 2026.

He directed the officials concerned to expedite work on Capital Smart City project in Islamabad.

He was speaking during his visit to Safe City headquarters in Islamabad today along with Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhary.

The Minister said basic civic facilities like Rescue 1122, traffic and security will be integrated into the central system in the smart city.

He said the Capital Smart City project will be adopted as a model to make Islamabad the safest city.

M-Tag Points Set Up in Islamabad

In order to facilitate the public, the district administration earlier set up additional M-Tag points in Islamabad.

10 M-Tag centres in Islamabad are fully operational for the facilitation of the public. More staff has also been deployed at these centres so the process could be expedited and there is less rush.

According to the Islamabad administration, in view of rising rush one more M-Tag centre has been set up at Parade Ground.

The administration advised residents to visit the new centre to avoid long queues, adding that motorists can get their M-Tags issued immediately at the Parade Ground facility.

Vehicles without M-Tags are being identified through scanners placed at various points, and the administration has warned that strict action will be taken against vehicles found without the tag.

The process of installing M-Tags on vehicles in the federal capital is moving ahead rapidly. According to the district administration, 49,551 vehicles have received M-Tags since November 14, while another 2,875 vehicles were registered in the 24 hours.

Officials said that once the system is fully functional, vehicles found without an M-Tag may face hefty fines or even be taken to police stations. The Safe City team is also finalising technical integration to ensure accurate identification of vehicles across the city’s surveillance network.
