The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled a major infrastructure plan for residents of Islamabad, announcing the construction of a six-lane Service Road East along the Islamabad Expressway.
The new service road will stretch nearly nine kilometres, linking Faizabad Flyover to Gulberg Greens. The project also includes the construction of three underpasses aimed at ensuring uninterrupted, signal-free traffic flow, a move expected to significantly ease congestion on one of the capital’s busiest corridors.
Estimated cost of project Rs7.4 billion
According to media reports, the estimated cost of the project is 7.4 billion rupees. Applications have been invited for the pre-qualification of construction firms. Additionally, a bridge will be constructed at Faizabad to connect the service road with the Orchard Scheme road on Murree Road. Another underpass will be built at Khanna Bridge.
The CDA’s Procurement and Contracts Directorate has initiated the pre-qualification process for construction firms and has formally invited applications.
The project will be supervised by a consulting firm in collaboration with the Roads Directorate, and the hiring process has also begun. Applications for consultancy services have been invited until April 30.
Currently, the existing service road is a single carriageway and is in poor condition. Due to increasing traffic congestion on the Islamabad Expressway, this new six-lane service road is being developed to ease traffic pressure and improve overall flow.
It is worth mentioning that the CDA Board had also approved the allotment of additional land in H-11/1 for the Jinnah Medical Complex and Research Centre. In the meeting held earlier this month, it was decided to extend the agreement with the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) for the continued use of the Losar landfill site.
Chairman CDA, Sohail Ashraf, directed authorities to begin work on developing a scientific landfill site for Islamabad, stressing that environmental protection must be a key priority in this initiative.
The board also approved an extension of the agreement for collecting solid waste from the Waste Transfer Station in Islamabad and transporting it to the Losar dumping site, which is managed by RWMC.
