Authorities in Islamabad have ordered the temporary closure of two major weekly bazaars due to fire safety concerns.
The H-9 and G-6 weekly bazaars will remain closed from October 16 (today), until they meet the required fire safety standards.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration has issued an official notice confirming the decision.
According to the notification, both H-9 and G-6 markets must obtain fire safety clearance before they can reopen. The markets must obtain clearance from Capital Emergency Services and the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
Both departments will need to confirm that the bazaars meet the required safety standards.
The authorities have also directed the relevant market administrations to complete the necessary safety work.
The closure order was issued with the approval of the Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI).
Reopening date for weekly bazaars
The temporary closure may affect shoppers and traders who regularly visit the H-9 and G-6 weekly bazaars.
However, the notification does not provide an exact date for the markets to reopen.
Their reopening will depend on the completion of safety arrangements and approval from the relevant departments.
Islamabad bans sheesha cafes
Previously, authorities decided to shut down all types of sheesha cafes, indoor and outdoor in Islamabad following directions from the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Reportedly, authorities will take strict legal action against anyone who violates the ban.
The move comes after the Islamabad High Court raised serious concerns about illegal sheesha cafes operating in the city.
The court summoned Islamabad’s Chief Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner.
Both officials were directed to submit affidavits confirming that no illegal sheesha cafe would be allowed to operate in the capital.
