Web desk: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced sit-in protests at 13 different locations across Karachi on Thursday, December 19. JI has also urged citizens to participate in large numbers.
JI leader Taufiquddin Siddiqui said the protests will be held against what he described as the menace of “killer dumpers and tankers,” alleged extortion in the name of e-challans, rising fatalities caused by heavy traffic, government apathy, and the city’s crumbling infrastructure.
He added that the protest sit-ins will begin at 4:00 PM.

According to Siddiqui, the sit-ins will be staged at Star Gate (Shahrah-e-Faisal), MA Jinnah Road, University Road, Dawood Chowrangi, Korangi Crossing, Noorani Kabab House Chowrangi, Tibet Centre, University Road (Meteorological Department), Power House Chowrangi, Hub River Road, Pracha Chowk (Sher Shah), Dolmen Mall Hyderi (North Nazimabad), Liaquatabad No. 10, Sohrab Goth, and Orangi Town No. 5.
JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan will address the protest sit-ins. Additionally, along with deputy amirs, district and local leaders will also address it.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced that a nationwide protest will be held on December 21. After this, the party will unveil its next course of action.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman criticised the recently passed Punjab Local Government Act, calling it “a blot on democracy.”
He said the practices being carried out in the Senate and assemblies were now being pushed down to the grassroots level.
Further, he added that the last local government elections in Punjab were held in 2015. According to him, the ‘Local Government Act passed in Punjab is a blot on democracy. What they are doing in the Senate and assemblies is now being taken to the grassroots level as well. The last local government elections were held in Punjab in 2015.’
