JUI-F announces nationwide protest over fuel price hike

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced that his party will hold nationwide protest demonstrations next Friday in response to the recent surge in petroleum prices.

Speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, Fazlur Rehman said the JUI Central Majlis-e-Shura recently held a two-day meeting to review the domestic and international situation.

He added that the hike in fuel prices has disrupted the lives of ordinary citizens and triggered the party’s decision to mobilise protests.

He said that the recent rise in petroleum prices has shaken everyone, disturbed the peace of ordinary citizens, and prompted the party to organise protest demonstrations next Friday.

He further stated that domestic violence, issues related to transgender rights, the ban on marriage under the age of 18, and other laws contrary to Sharia should be abolished. Preparations are also being made to grant wives a 50 per cent share in their husbands’ property.

Responding to a question, Fazlur Rehman criticised the PML-N government, calling it illegitimate and dependent on the support of the People’s Party. He asserted that JUI has the right to oppose such a government and will defend Islamic laws.

He added that starting from April 12, the party will mobilise gatherings against the government, beginning in Mardan. Considering certain state sensitivities, he suggested that an in-camera session of Parliament should be convened to brief them on the global situation, Pakistan’s position, and border closures.
