Karachi Traffic Police will expand its artificial intelligence (AI) based traffic monitoring system to more roads by August 2026, according to reports on Monday. The new areas will include Airport Road, Clifton, and the Do Talwar and Teen Talwar junctions of the city.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said that the system is currently being tested on Shahrah-e-Faisal. It is one of the busiest roads in Karachi.
Twenty high quality Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have been installed there. These cameras watch traffic violations all day and night up to Drigh Road.
He said that the Shahrah-e-Faisal was chosen for the project because a large number of vehicles use this road every day.
According to the DIG Traffic, the system is currently issuing about 100 challans every day to drivers who break lane rules on Shahrah-e-Faisal.
He said first time offenders are not automatically exempt from fines. However, some motorists may receive a one time delay facility.

The AI system can also tell the difference between deliberate violations and emergency situations.
Cases that involve broken vehicles, damaged roads, potholes, or other unavoidable problems are checked manually before any action is taken.
The amount of the fine depends on the type of vehicle and the risk involved. Motorcycles and rickshaws can be fined Rs2,500. Cars can be fined Rs5,000. Buses can receive a Rs7,500 fine. Dumpers and tankers can be fined Rs10,000.
