A violent dispute between residents of an apartment building in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VI has gone viral on the internet after CCTV footage emerged showing an alleged assault involving a dumbbell, the presence of police personnel and the destruction of a security camera.
The incident took place on August 21 at an apartment building on Khayaban-e-Bukhari and reportedly stemmed from a long-running dispute over maintenance charges, water supply and other utilities.
What led to the dispute?
According to residents, tensions had been building between families living on different floors of the apartment building. One side allegedly accused another resident, who was reportedly involved in managing the building’s maintenance, of cutting off their water supply, damaging their water tank and threatening electricity disconnection despite advance payments.
The dispute eventually escalated into a violent confrontation.
CCTV footage shows violent confrontation
The CCTV footage, which later went viral on social media, appears to show a woman rushing down a staircase while carrying a gym dumbbell before confronting another female resident.
She is seen allegedly striking the woman with the dumbbell as a heated argument unfolds inside the apartment building.
The footage also shows individuals appearing to be wearing police uniforms at the scene. Questions were raised after the personnel were seen restraining one of the alleged victims during the confrontation.
At one stage, the woman and her brother managed to enter their apartment. However, the footage shows people standing outside the door, banging on it and shouting.
Another controversial moment in the footage shows a man in plain clothes allegedly using a weapon provided by a uniformed individual to damage a CCTV camera.
Police role comes under scrutiny
The alleged involvement of police personnel has become one of the central issues in the case.
Reports suggested that the woman and her brother were later arrested and booked in a case registered at the Darakhshan police station, despite CCTV footage raising questions about the sequence of events.
An FIR was registered at around 1:40am on August 21 on the complaint of one of the women involved in the dispute.
The case initially included several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including assault, criminal intimidation and theft-related charges.
However, South DIG Syed Asad Raza later said that the section relating to the alleged theft of gold ornaments had been removed after investigators found that the incident appeared to primarily involve an assault.
Police officials said the CCTV footage reviewed so far did not support the initial allegations of snatching or theft.
Inquiry ordered into incident
Following public outrage and the circulation of CCTV footage online, senior police officials ordered an investigation into the incident.
Karachi Additional IG Azad Khan and South DIG Syed Asad Raza directed authorities to conduct an impartial inquiry and examine the role of all police personnel present at the apartment building.
An investigation team led by the SSP Investigation South has been tasked with reviewing CCTV footage, recording witness statements and questioning the police officials seen in the video.
The role of the man seen allegedly damaging the CCTV camera has also become a major focus of the investigation.
Police officials are investigating claims that he may be associated with the police force. His presence has raised further questions because the apartment building falls under the jurisdiction of the Darakhshan police station.
Authorities are now examining why he was present at the scene and whether any police influence played a role in the confrontation or the subsequent case registered against the siblings.
What happens next?
Police have said that all available CCTV footage, witness statements and other evidence will be examined before the investigation reaches a final conclusion.
Authorities have assured that action will be taken against any police official or individual found guilty of misconduct, bias or involvement in any irregularities.
