Karachi: Heavy rain triggers chaos, paralyses traffic, leaves bikers stranded

Karachi Heavy rain

Heavy rainfall lashed Karachi early Thursday under a new western weather system, disrupting daily life and creating chaos across the city.

Dark clouds covered the skyline in the morning, followed by steady showers in several areas. Commuters faced serious difficulties, while bikers struggled to navigate waterlogged roads and slippery conditions.

Multiple localities, including Defence, Saddar, Clifton, Shahrah-e-Faisal and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, received rainfall. Low-lying areas were inundated, worsening the situation for residents.

Urban flooding was reported at several points. Roads turned into ponds, severely affecting traffic flow. Motorcyclists remained the worst hit, with many forced to stop or take risky routes through accumulated water.

Key arteries such as University Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal saw water accumulation, causing long traffic jams. Areas including Liaquatabad, Gulshan Chorangi and Guru Mandir also reported standing water.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the weather system entered through Balochistan and will continue to affect Karachi. More rain, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, is expected during the day.

Wind speeds were recorded at 25km/h, with gusts likely to reach up to 50km/h. Authorities warned that strong winds could pose risks to weak structures.

Rainfall data showed 1mm at PAF Base Faisal, 2mm at Jinnah Terminal and 7mm in Saadi Town.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab directed municipal staff to remain on alert. He said rapid response teams have been formed to deal with emergency situations.
