Rain in Karachi plays havoc 700 feeders tripped

After heavy rain in Karachi on Thursday, electricity and gas supply were disrupted in many areas, creating serious problems for residents while atleast four people have been killed in rain related incidents.

According to media reports, both K-Electric and SSGC systems were affected after the rain. More than 700 feeders of K-Electric tripped. Water entered substations, leaving many areas without power for hours. Broken wires and damaged transformers also worsened the situation.

Areas including Sultanabad, Landhi, Korangi, Saudabad and Shah Faisal faced outages. Power supply was also affected in Kathore, Gadap, Orangi Town, Manghopir and SITE area.

New Karachi, Surjani, Garden, Korangi, Scheme 33, FB Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Sher Shah, Baldia, Ittehad Town and Moach Goth were also hit by outages.

Gas supply was suspended in several areas from around 1pm. Low pressure and outages caused problems for households, hotels and industries. Sources said gas shortage in the SSGC system led to suspension.

Four killed

Meanwhile, rain and strong winds caused accidents across the city. At least four people died and three were injured.

In Old Golimar, a wall collapsed on a rickshaw, killing the driver. In Orangi Town, three children were injured after a wall collapsed at a gathering place.

In New Karachi, a man died after electrocution inside his house. Another man died near PIB Colony, while a young girl died in Surjani after electric shocks.

Heavy rain and strong winds were reported in Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, Saddar, Malir, Gulshan-e-Maymar and North Karachi.

On Shahrah-e-Faisal, the track from Nursery to Baloch Colony bridge was closed for traffic. Water accumulation near a flyover in North Nazimabad badly affected traffic flow.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Karachi during the night.
