Karachi’s public transport system is set for a major upgrade, with the Sindh Cabinet approving Rs964.4 million for the procurement and operation of new buses under a non-ADP scheme.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at CM House on Tuesday, where a wide-ranging financial and development package was also discussed.
Improving urban mobility
The funding aims to expand the city’s bus network, providing safer and more reliable transport for residents who rely heavily on public transit for daily commutes. Officials said the move reflects the provincial government’s commitment to improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion in Pakistan’s largest city.
“The allocation for public transport is a step towards modernising Karachi’s bus fleet, ensuring better service and convenience for citizens,” said an official familiar with the plan.
While details on the number and model of buses are yet to be shared, the project will be managed directly under the provincial transport authorities to ensure timely delivery and operational efficiency.
Wider development initiatives
The cabinet meeting, attended by provincial ministers, advisers, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Principal Secretary to the CM Agha Wasif, and other officials, also approved several other development initiatives. These include Rs1 billion for producing public awareness films, Rs5.84 billion for Sindh Police to strengthen its capabilities, and Rs6.6 billion for the Thar coal railway project.
Chief Minister Shah directed all departments to ensure strict financial discipline and timely utilisation of funds, highlighting transparency as a key priority. Observers note that investment in public transport is critical for Karachi, where overcrowded buses and informal transit networks have long posed challenges for commuters.
Alongside the buses project, the cabinet greenlit funds for cultural, educational, and sports initiatives, as well as emergency water supply schemes and infrastructure improvements, signalling a multi-pronged approach to urban development in Sindh.
With the approval now in place, officials are expected to move quickly on procurement, aiming to make the new buses operational as soon as possible and transform daily commuting in Karachi.
