KARACHI: Karachi likely to witness wa ter shortage, with nearly shortfall of 100 million gallons of water per day (MGD) due to a power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said in a statement, that a “major” power breakdown in the second phase of the Dhabeji station was reported at 6:35am.
“Due to the power suspension, line number 5 has been affected,” the KWSC official said, adding that two pumps of the second phase have been shut as a result.
“Due to the pumps’ shutdown and the line being impacted, the city could face a shortage of 100 million gallons of water,” the statement cautioned.
The KWSC official stated that repair work of the affected line “will be completed on an emergency basis”, and assured citizens that the utility’s management was making every effort to complete the repair work in a timely manner.
“As soon as the repair work has been completed, Dhabeji Pumping Station’s system will return to routine,” he added.
The statement recalled that the K-III Pumping House at the Dhabeji station had remained shut for 36 hours from November 5 onwards due to a cable fault.
Karachi’s University Road to Remain Closed Till December 30
The daily commuters in Karachi continue to suffer as the city busy university road to remain closed from November 10 (today) till December 30.
As per details, new digging and other work along the University Road will be carried out under the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP), following the disruption caused by the Red Line BRT project.
According to the notification, the University Road section between Nipa Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University will remain closed from November 10 to December 30 for laying of the pipelines.
“The closure is necessary for laying new 96-inch and 72-inch pipelines as part of the K-IV augmentation plan,” said a the official.
“This stretch will form part of a new network that’s crucial for improving the city’s water supply.”
The project will install a water network spanning nearly seven kilometers. The work will be carried out in two phases: the first phase will cover Nipa to Federal Urdu University, while the second phase will extend from Hussain Square to Nipa Chowrangi.
