The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has successfully completed the replacement of the 60-year-old Line No. 5, which supplies water from Dhabeji to the city.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab described the project as a significant milestone in the restoration and modernization of the city’s water infrastructure. He said the upgrade of decades-old water systems is being carried out to meet Karachi’s growing needs.
The mayor added that KWSC is accelerating the rehabilitation and modernization of aging water infrastructure on a phased basis to ensure improved, efficient, and uninterrupted water supply to residents.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the water line was originally installed in 1966 and had become severely deteriorated over time, suffering from multiple leakages and technical faults. Frequent power outages and pressure surges caused by system breakdowns repeatedly damaged the pipeline, creating serious challenges for the city’s water distribution network.
The spokesperson said recurring failures in the aging line had disrupted water transmission, but its complete replacement has now made the system more stable, efficient, and reliable.
The completion of the project is expected to significantly reduce water losses and technical issues while improving the overall performance of Karachi’s water supply network.
KWSC said the project marks an important milestone under the Water and Sewerage Improvement Program, which is being implemented with support from the World Bank and other development partners to modernize Karachi’s water infrastructure.
The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to fully rehabilitating and upgrading the city’s aging water network to build a stronger, more sustainable, and more efficient water supply system for the future.
