Governor’s Rule: Bulldozers move in to repair long-neglected Karak road

Construction and repair work has finally begun on the main road of Takht-e-Nasrati, an important tehsil of Karak district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which had remained in a dilapidated condition for years.

During the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure, prolonged administrative inactivity and the deteriorating condition of the road caused serious difficulties for local traders and residents. Commercial activities in the area were also badly affected.

The main bazaar of Takht-e-Nasrati is not only the largest shopping and commercial centre for the local population but also connects surrounding settlements with other parts of the district. However, development work remained slow during the PTI government’s tenure and subsequent administrative changes in the province.

The road had turned into a series of potholes due to the absence of an effective drainage system and the movement of heavy vehicles. Deep potholes frequently caused traffic congestion, while dust rising from the damaged road made life difficult for shopkeepers and residents.

Even light rainfall resulted in rainwater and sewage accumulating in the bazaar, making it difficult for pedestrians and shoppers to move around.

Governor’s rule mobilises administration

Following recent political and administrative developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the imposition of Governor’s Rule, the administration has shifted its focus towards completing long-pending infrastructure and development projects on an emergency basis.

Strict instructions have reportedly been issued to local administrations and relevant departments to avoid unnecessary delays in the rehabilitation of roads in commercially important public areas.

In line with these directives, machinery and construction staff have been deployed at the site to pave the Takht-e-Nasrati Bazaar road, improve the drainage system and carry out the necessary reconstruction work.

Public reaction

Local traders and residents of Takht-e-Nasrati have expressed satisfaction over the commencement of construction work.

They believe that improvements to the bazaar road will not only boost commercial activities but also make it easier for customers and visitors to reach the market.

The start of work on the main road is being viewed as a positive step towards restoring infrastructure in the region and addressing problems that residents have faced for years.

PTI government criticised over years of neglect

Despite making repeated promises of change and development over the years, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf provincial government failed to deliver meaningful development to the people of Karak, particularly residents of Takht-e-Nasrati, leaving them with assurances, slogans and verbal commitments.

The main bazaar remained neglected throughout PTI’s prolonged periods in power, with local residents accusing the administration of persistent indifference and negligence.

They said that elected representatives and political leaders secured public votes but failed to revisit the badly damaged road or address the community’s longstanding concerns after the elections.

Public welfare projects were sidelined while political rivalries and narrative-driven politics remained the primary focus.

The swift action following the arrival of the new administrative setup has prompted questions about the previous government’s priorities. It has also highlighted how development projects can be initiated within days when there is administrative will and commitment, according to local criticism of the previous provincial government.
