Gilgit: Karakoram Highway gets blocked due to landslides

GILGIT: The Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Gilgit-Baltistan’s (GB) Chanas area remained blocked for several hours due to landsliding.

Thousands of people were trapped due to the blockade.

While speaking to a private media channel, Nagar district Deputy Commissioner Asghar Khan said that the rockfall occurred on Tuesday.

He advised the tourists not to visit the area until confirmation regarding KKH is received.

Khan said, “We immediately informed the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and they immediately arrived with machinery.”

Khan added that the stones blocking the road are quite large and require blasting in order to clear the way.

Nobody was hurt in the rock slide, but access to the Hunza and Nagar districts was cut off.

People Stranded on the Highway

For eight hours, thousands of students, patients, and tourists remained stranded. A long queue of vehicles formed on both sides of the road.

Khan said that the clearance of the highway is in process, and it is a time-consuming process.

He predicted that the road would be reopened for traffic by 11 am on Wednesday.

The KKH is no stranger to rockfalls, landslides, or other natural events that block the road.

In the past year, many areas of Gilgit Baltistan were blocked due to landslides, leaving foreign tourists and thousands of people stranded on the road.
