Islamabad Family courts overwhelmed as Khula, maintenance cases surge

Islamabad’s family courts are experiencing a significant increase in workload as the number of khula and maintenance-related cases continues to rise sharply, leading to a growing backlog in the judicial system.

According to media reports, more than 45,000 khula-related cases have already been filed this year alone. On average, over 300 new cases are being registered daily, while nearly 9,000 cases are added each month. During court working hours, this translates to roughly 38 new filings every hour.

Officials note that the trend has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Reportedly, khula and related family disputes numbered around 85,000 in 2023, rising to 91,000 in 2024, and crossing the 100,000 mark in 2025.

Alongside this surge, family courts are also witnessing a notable rise in court marriages, with around 30 such marriages being registered daily. However, officials say a number of these unions, particularly those rooted in love marriages, are also leading to early-stage disputes and litigation.

Legal experts point to multiple contributing factors, including changing social dynamics, economic pressures, and greater awareness of legal rights among spouses, all of which are placing additional strain on already overburdened family courts.
