Kim Kardashian has achieved a major legal win after a court approved that a man who filed a defamation lawsuit against her due to a mistaken social media post pay over $167,000 in legal expenses.
This lawsuit originated from an incident in February 2024, where Kardashian accidentally shared a photo of the wrong Ivan Cantu while promoting criminal justice reform on social media.
As per court documents examined by the Daily Mail, the reality television personality was awarded $167,473.69 following the dismissal of Ivan Cantu’s defamation lawsuit against her.
The individual mistakenly identified by Kardashian bore the same name as a Texas death row inmate who had recently been executed after being convicted of a double murder in 2000.
Despite Kardashian quickly removing the image and later calling the error as an honest mistake, Cantu began taking legal action against her, alleging that the post harmed his reputation and caused him emotional distress.
Cantu initially lodged the defamation lawsuit in 2024, accusing Kim Kardashian of having “published and spread false information” about him.
He argued in court documents that the social media post was “clearly untrue, erroneous, unfounded, shocking, scandalous, degrading, disgraceful, and/or shameful.”
Nevertheless, the case was dismissed in November after a federal judge determined that Cantu did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that he experienced actual harm from the accidental post.
This dismissal later allowed Kardashian to pursue reimbursement for her legal costs.
According to court documents, Kardashian’s legal representatives said that Cantu filed “a clearly meritless lawsuit” against the billionaire reality star following what they called a simple mistake.
Her legal team further went on to say that the man was trying to punish Kardashian for her public debate on criminal justice reform matters.
