The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has established Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Institute to modernize the province’s education system through technology.
The initiative has been launched by the provincial Elementary and Secondary Education Department.
The newly established AI and Digital Institute consists of seven members. The institute will prepare technical frameworks and guidelines to support the use of modern technology across the education department.
Institute to reduce manual procedures
One of the institute’s main responsibilities will be to identify manual processes that can be replaced with more efficient digital systems.
It will also recommend improvements to existing procedures and help develop modern digital applications. These applications are expected to improve transparency and make education services faster and more efficient.
Earlier this year, the provincial government also moved towards establishing an AI Education Authority to support AI-based teaching systems and other education reforms.
In August, KP formally launched its Global Virtual School, another major digital education project. The programme uses virtual classrooms and AI-based learning to connect students, particularly those living in remote and underserved areas.
The Global Virtual School is designed for students from grades 6 to 12. It offers live and recorded lessons, digital learning resources, assessments, progress tracking and virtual laboratory exercises.
An AI teacher can also answer students’ questions and explain lessons in Urdu, English and Pashto.
The province initially planned to connect 175 schools to the system before expanding the network to around 500 schools.
Additionally, the province’s Digital Transformation Strategy 2030 includes plans for AI education, government workforce training, AI integration into school curricula and the creation of a School of AI.
