In celebration of Pakistan Day on March 23, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has established an ambitious goal of planting one million trees within a single day.
The tree planting drive seeks to transform the national observance into a major symbol of environmental accountability in the fight against climate change.
This initiative is being launched under the auspices of the Green Khyber Pakhtunkhwa program, with tree planting activities scheduled to occur at the same time throughout the province.
They will range from the fertile plains of Peshawar to the mountainous valleys of Swat and Chitral, and extending to the expansive lands of DI Khan.
Ahmad Jalil, the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), stated that this campaign aims to link patriotism with environmental awareness.
“Pakistan Day commemorates the aspiration for an independent homeland,” he stated.
At 9 a.m. on March 23, volunteers across the province are expected to begin planting saplings supplied by the forest department nurseries.
This activity will persist throughout the day until the last sapling is planted,” Ahmad Jalil added.
Ahead of Pakistan Day, he emphasised that forests have historically been vital to KP and the rest of the country’s environmental well-being.
Environmental specialists have also warned that deforestation and rapid urbanisation have compromised this natural barrier, particularly in urban areas like Peshawar, where air pollution levels have escalated significantly
