Sri Lanka T20I captain Kusal Mendis has described Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam as one of the best players across all formats. Addressing a press conference, Mendis said Sri Lanka’s squad comprises several young players who have performed well in domestic cricket, adding that he has full confidence in his team.
Mendis praised head coach Gary Kirsten, saying he has a distinct coaching style and excels at managing players. He added that Kirsten understands Sri Lankan cricket culture and is preparing the team for the upcoming World Cup and T20 World Cup.
Commenting on the Rawalpindi pitch, Mendis said it appeared favourable for batting. He added that Sri Lanka planned to start with three fast bowlers, while describing the team’s bowling attack as strong and experienced. Mendis also acknowledged the quality of Pakistan’s fast bowlers, saying they are talented and difficult to face.
Speaking about Babar Azam, Mendis described him as an outstanding player and noted that he has also played alongside him in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He said Babar is among the best players in all formats and may be disappointed at not being included in Pakistan’s squad.
Earlier, newly appointed T20I captain Sahibzada Farhan said the upcoming series against Sri Lanka is an important one, adding that he will do his best to perform well in front of the home crowd.
T20I captain Sahibzada Farhan said on Thursday that leading the national team was a matter of pride and that he was determined to make the most of his first opportunity to captain the Green Shirts.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi, Farhan acknowledged that pressure was an inherent part of captaincy but stressed that it should not affect his performance or decision-making. “Feeling pressure is natural. There are 10 players behind you, but as captain, you have to lead from the front,” Farhan said.
