LAHORE: Despite the use of anti-smog guns in Lahore, the provincial capital has once again recorded the world’s worst air quality with AQI reading of 362.

The worldwide air quality monitoring platform IQAir stated that Lahore’s air quality today worsens to a level hazardous for public health, surpassing other major cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, and Beijing.

The city of lights, Karachi was also featured among the top five polluted cities, recording an AQI of 161.

The hazardous pollution levels pose serious risks to residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments.

Anti-SMOG Guns

To control smog, Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz has ordered to stop large-scale infrastructure and construction activity across Punjab.

Moreover, Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb launched anti-smog guns.

Anti-smog guns have been made functional at several key locations, including Allama Iqbal Town, Multan Road, Karim Block, Ravi Pul, Shahdara Flyover, Thokar Niaz Baig, Upper Mall, and GT Road.

In 2024, IQAir recorded Lahore’s pollution peaking at a hazardous AQI of 1,110 on November 14.

It is pertinent to mention here that experts have warned that exposure to such high pollution levels can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and even premature death. Both outdoor and indoor air pollution are linked to a wide range of harmful health outcomes, affecting lung development, cognitive abilities, and life expectancy.

Additionally, experts noted that due to low morning temperatures, polluted particles remain suspended in the air for extended periods. To counter this, anti-smog guns will be deployed in areas with the highest pollution levels.
