LAHORE: Thunderstorms and heavy rain with strong winds hit Lahore, turning the weather pleasant and cooler after a stretch of hot days.
The rain lashed several parts of Punjab, including Lahore, resulting in disruption of power supply in many areas.
These areas of Punjab, such as Gulberg, Kalma Chowk, Laxmi Chowk, Johar Town, and Cantt received intense rain and lightning. Same weather were reported in Okara, Sahiwal, Mureedke, Pattoki, and Jaranwala, where multiple feeders tripped, plunging the areas into darkness.
Rainfall intensity
The Meteorological Department stated that Lahore recorded 19.5 mm of rain overall, with the highest rainfall 38 mm reported in Gulshan Ravi, followed by 36 mm in Gulberg, 35 mm in Samanabad, and 34 mm in Iqbal Town.
Rain in Punjab cities
Heavy and moderate rain was also recorded in Mianwali, Okara, Tandlianwala, Renala Khurd, Ferozewala, Khanqan Dogran, Jaranwala, Phalia, and Phull Nagar.
In Ferozewala, the rain was accompanied by thunder and lightning, with residents reporting instant power outages as LESCO feeders tripped. Several parts of the city were left without electricity for hours.
“The heatwave broke as soon as the rain started. The weather turned pleasant instantly,” said a resident of Ferozewala.
According to the forecast, parts of Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Gilgit-Baltistan are set to receive showers.
Rainfall is also predicted in the upper catchment areas of major rivers, including the Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej. In Punjab, the districts of Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Hafizabad, Sargodha, and Khushab are likely to be affected.
Sindh is also on alert, and Karachi, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Umerkot, and Tharparkar are likely to receive rain.
In the meantime, widespread showers will occur in various districts, including Chitral, Dir, Haripur, Kohat, Kohistan, Khyber, Kurram, and Mansehra.
