LAHORE: Lahore has been ranked as the world’s second most polluted city as thick smog has blanketed the provincial capital.

As per details, the city has once again ranked as the second most polluted city in the world, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching an alarming 471. Some parts of the city have reported even higher readings: Lower Mall 804, Gulberg 758, Sanda Road 745, DHA 724, and Shalimar 585.

Other cities in Punjab are also suffering under thick smog. Gujranwala recorded an AQI of 637, Faisalabad 365, and Multan 245all falling within hazardous levels that pose serious health risks.

The Environmental Protection Department warned that polluted air coming from the Indian border has started affecting the air quality of the region.

Environmental experts said smoke from industrial and agricultural zones in Indian Punjab has drifted into Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sheikhupura due to winds blowing from east to west.

The situation has been aggravated by an increase in crop residue burning across the border, officials added.

In response, the Punjab government has intensified its crackdown on smoke-emitting kilns, factories, and vehicles.

Teams from the Environment and Forest departments are operating round the clock to monitor violations.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has urged the citizens to stay indoors during early morning and evening hours and to report any incidents of crop burning immediately.

Authorities reiterated that the government is enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy on the burning of crop residues to curb worsening air pollution.

It is pertinent to mention here that experts have warned that exposure to such high pollution levels can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and even premature death. Both outdoor and indoor air pollution are linked to a wide range of harmful health outcomes, affecting lung development, cognitive abilities, and life expectancy.

Additionally, experts noted that due to low morning temperatures, polluted particles remain suspended in the air for extended periods. To counter this, anti-smog guns will be deployed in areas with the highest pollution levels.
