Mela Chiraghan begins tomorrow in Lahore

The annual Urs of Madhu Lal Hussain also known as the Mela Chiraghan will begin tomorrow (Saturday).

The day is declared a local holiday in Lahore.

The Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department had sent a summary to the Punjab government and have requested a local holiday for the festival.

Mela Chiraghan observes a local holiday every year. This year too, March 28 is declared a holiday.

The annual three day  Urs celebrations of Hazrat Shah Hussain, commonly known as Madhu Lal Hussain holds strong religious importance. It also reflects local culture and traditional celebrations.

The day begins with the ritual of traditional chadar laying on the grave of the great saint.

Every year, a large number of devotees visit the shrine of Madholal Hussain. They offer prayers and take part in rituals. The devotes lighted candles for fulfillment of their prayers and wishes. They also distributed charity food and set up milk and sharbat sabeel. They also laid floral wreaths and chaddar at the graves of Shah Hussain and Madho Lal Hussain.

The shrine is illuminated. Various cultural events take place. Local trade and business activity also increases during the festival.

The  Auqaf Deparment also organises a Mehfil-e-Samma and musical gatherings during the urs.

The illustrious son of Lahore, Shah Hussain, was born in 1538 to a convert weavers’ family. He is known for his love for a Brahmin boy, Madho or Madhu Lal, and they are often referred to as a single person with a composite name of Madho Lal Hussain.

 Madho’s grave lies next to the Shah Hussain’s in the shrine. Shah Hussain is the pioneer of Kafi form of Punjabi poetry.
