The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) received a significant multi-year grant from the Gates Foundation on Wednesday to create Pakistan’s inaugural nationally coordinated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub.
According to a press release, the initiative will initially concentrate on maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), which is one of the most pressing public health issues in the country, while being structured as a long-term platform to tackle other vital development challenges.
The National AI Hub unites LUMS and Aga Khan University (AKU) to confront the challenges related to maternal, newborn, and child health.
The press release indicated that LUMS would utilise its expertise in AI, language technologies, gender and technology research, and digital public health innovation, while AKU would offer technical and clinical support, contribute to maternal health datasets, and aid in the field testing of AI-enabled interventions across various care environments.
The hub’s objective is to create AI-driven healthcare solutions for underserved populations, employing predictive analytics to enhance prevention, early diagnosis, and continuity of care.
Additionally, it will bring together government partners, clinicians, AI researchers, policymakers, and innovators to enhance decision-making, referral pathways, and care for women and newborns throughout the country.
Google launches AI certificate
Earlier, Google announced the launch of the Google AI Professional Certificate, a new credential that meets industry standards and is designed to tackle the growing skills gap in artificial intelligence.
This program is now available in Pakistan.
According to reports, the program extends beyond mere theoretical knowledge, focusing on AI fluency and equipping workers with the practical skills required to integrate artificial intelligence into their daily professional activities.
The new Google AI certificate is intended to bridge that gap. The Master AI by Doing initiative employs a “Learn by Doing” methodology, which includes more than 20 hands-on activities.
