Lund University is a well-known public university in Sweden, which was founded in 1666 and is one of the oldest institutions in Northern Europe.
It is worth discussing how, despite its strong academic reputation, the university often becomes the subject of jokes and viral memes in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India because of its name.
Does it mean that the ‘meme culture’ in South Asia is really strong? Or does it point at irresponsible use of the power social media gives one?
Role of language
Language plays an important role in coveying of messages and the development of humour since it is the primary medium through which it is constructed, delivered, and interpreted.
The jokes mainly come from a language difference. In Urdu and Hindi, the word “Lund” is a vulgar slang term for the male genital organ.
In Swedish, however, the word means a grove or green pastures. It reflects the peaceful and historic setting of the university.
Because of this coincidence, social media users from Pakistan and India often post inappropriate comments on the university’s official Facebook and Instagram pages.
These include jokes, puns, and remarks directed at students and admissions.
However, crossing the line, some comments also include offensive language.

University responds
The university has addressed the issue publicly in the past.
In a Facebook post, the administration said a large amount of time is spent deleting excessive troll messages.
This happens despite Lund University being ranked among the world’s top universities.
In 2020, the university released an official statement on Facebook.
It acknowledged that its name may sound funny to some people. It also requested users to avoid posting lewd or disrespectful comments.
The administration said that with thousands of languages in the world, such misunderstandings are sometimes unavoidable.

Need for responsible behaviour
The situation highlights the need for responsible behaviour on social media.
Not just this, when surfing on social media, a person is directly or indirectly representing their country, culture, and heritage.
Having a crude and bad mouthed sense of humour can harm the reputation of those involved.
Adding to this is the risk of potentially harming someone’s mental health or morale.
Aside from the story of the iconic university, individuals need to be responsible on social media.
Even if making jokes about someone becomes a viral trend, showing kindness is important.
