M-Tag deadline nears: what happens to vehicles without tags after 15 January?

M-Tag deadline nears

WEB DESK: With only 10 days left in the extended deadline, officials in Islamabad say the M-Tag campaign is moving at a steady pace.

The government has asked citizens to display the electronic tag on their vehicles by 15 January. After the due date, authorities plan to check them at city entry points.

Rapid Pace of Registrations

According to the Excise and Taxation Department, a total of 129,436 vehicles have been issued M-Tags at 16 centres across the federal capital.

Officials said 2,982 vehicles were fitted with tags in the past 24 hours. Director General of Excise Irfan Memon said the daily figures show growing awareness among residents.

“In view of the rush of citizens, additional staff have been deployed at all points,” Mr Memon said. He added that more counters have been opened to reduce waiting time.

Preparations for Enforcement

Officials confirmed that M-Tag readers installed under the Safe City system are now active and linked with monitoring networks.

Moreover, the setup will help identify vehicles entering Islamabad without valid tags. Authorities believe this will improve traffic oversight and enforcement.

By adding, Mr Memon said that after 15 January, vehicles without M-Tags will be stopped at checkpoints around the city. The checks will begin in phases at designated locations.

Advice for Vehicle Owners

The department urged citizens to visit centres with complete documents to ensure quick service. Required papers include vehicle registration records and identification cards. Officials said missing documents remain a common reason for delays.

Stock and Arrangements Strengthened

Due to the arrival of more vehicles, the department said M-Tag stock has been increased to avoid shortages. Mr Memon noted that these steps are meant for facilitation. Residents were advised not to wait for the final days so queues can stay manageable.

Broader Digital Plan

The M-Tag initiative will help to update vehicle records and support digital enforcement.

Furthermore, the officials expect registrations to rise further in the coming days and appealed to citizens to comply before the deadline ends.
