ISLAMABAD: In a major setback for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared all members of the National and Provincial Assemblies, previously affiliated with PTI and the Sunni Ittehad Council, as independent lawmakers.
According to a statement issued by the ECP, the decision was made in light of the Supreme Court’s detailed verdict dated August 25, 2025.
The commission said that after the court’s ruling, the affiliation of these lawmakers with PTI or the Sunni Ittehad Council no longer stands.
The ECP further stated that following the constitutional bench’s decision, the party positions in the National Assembly and all provincial assemblies (Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh) have also been revised to reflect the change.
This development is likely to carry major political consequences, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where PTI-backed Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur resigned a day earlier on the instructions of party founder Imran Khan.
With the election for a new chief minister expected in the coming days, the ECP’s notification could significantly alter the province’s power equation, as independent lawmakers are no longer obligated to follow party directives or leadership decisions.
