Islamabad: Margalla Road extension projects begin

Margalla road extension project begins

Margalla Road extension project linking it directly to the motorway has been started which will not only provide relief to the citizens of Islamabad but will also cut travel time.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday visited the site and reviewed construction work. Officials briefed him in detail on the project.

According to the briefing, 2.7-kilometre project will include a three-lane road on both sides, along with a two-lane service road.

An interchange on GT Road, two underpasses, and a bridge will also be built. Work on another 2.5-kilometre section will be completed by the Punjab government.

The minister said the project will provide an alternative, faster, and easier route between Islamabad and the motorway.

It will reduce traffic pressure and cut travel time. He directed authorities to use all resources to complete the project within the set deadline.

After completion, the Margalla Avenue extension will directly connect GT Road (N-5) with Motorway M-1, improving overall connectivity.

Construction of an interchange on the GT Road is also part of the project. The ending point of this road is near the Sangjani Grid Station, within the limits of Islamabad. The National Highway Authority (NHA) has already started constructing another 2.5-kilometre portion of the road falling within the limits of Rawalpindi.

This section will be linked with the M-1 near the AWT Housing Society. NHA’s contractor – NLC – has already started work, which continues at full pace.

The projects are expected to offer modern and efficient travel facilities, especially for residents in Islamabad’s suburban areas.
