Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has ordered a crackdown against transporters who charge excessive fares on Eid.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, while directing to take legal action against those charging extra fares, said that necessary measures should be taken in all districts to ensure implementation of fixed fares.
To provide relief to the public, the Transport Department and other concerned authorities should carry out continuous checking in the field.
Exploitation of poor passengers returning to their homes on the occasion of Eid will not be allowed.
The Chief Minister Punjab directed Deputy Commissioners to strictly monitor and prevent overcharging and ticket black marketing.
She also ordered to display fare lists at all bus stands and to arrange iftar for fasting passengers.
Instructions were also given to ensure cleanliness at all bus stands, proper seating arrangements in waiting areas, and availability of fans.
Strict monitoring of the movement of anti-social elements in bazaars and markets should also be carried out.
Earlier, Travellers in Rawalpindi were feeling the pinch this Eid ul Fitr as transporters at all 55 major and minor bus terminals have hiked fares for suburban and long-distance routes by Rs 600 to 800 per ride.
This increase in prices has disrupted families returning to their towns to celebrate Eid.
The families that are travelling from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the total cost has skyrocketed from Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 for a whole round trip.
Meanwhile, railway fares have also gone up by 5 to 10 per cent, impacting ticket sales and leaving many commuters scrambling to adjust their travel plans.
The increase is being blamed on rising fuel prices, and transport operators warn of further disruptions if conditions don’t improve.
