Measles outbreak alerts issued as cases rise

In the first 4 weeks of the year (January to April) 1695 suspected cases of measles have been reported in Punjab.

A report submitted to the Lahore High Court by the DG Health Services of the Punjab Health Department has these details.

According to the report presented during the hearing of a petition against deaths due to measles 330 patients have been confirmed with the aid of laboratory tests in the first four weeks of this year and 40 outbreak alerts have been issued across the province.

The report also added that in 2024, 23,680 suspected cases of measles were reported from Punjab out of which 6,747 were confirmed by laboratory test and 16 deaths were recorded. In 2025, 19,913 suspected cases were reported with 4,000 confirmed Lab and 4 death were recorded because of measles.

The DG Health Services’ report stated that taking into account the current measles situation the monitoring of measles had been intensified.

Multiple meetings have been taken under the leadership of the Chief Secretary and the Health Minister and instructions have been issued for improving surveillance and monitoring systems at the district and hospital levels.

It is noted that last year measles vaccination campaign has run from 17-29 November 2025 during which all the children aged 6 months to 5 years old were supplied free of cost vaccines.

Lahore reports record rise in stray dog bite cases

A report also revealed that Lahore has seen an upsetting upsurge in incidents of stray dog bites that has raised serious public health concerns.

As per hospital records 1,409 dog bite cases have been reported at ten government hospitals from last month to date with women and children among the affected.

Officials said that Mayo Hospital alone recorded 46 dog bite cases during this month and of the victims brought to the hospital, 13 were women.

Health authorities have expressed concern over the growing number of cases and stressed the need for urgent preventive measures across the city.

The Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of the rising dog bite cases and asked the competent authorities to report.
