Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected claims made by US President Donald Trump that she “begged” for a photograph with him, saying he “fabricated” a story about her recent interaction with him.
Trump, speaking to an Italian TV channel, alleged that Meloni had “begged” him to take a photograph with her during a G7 summit. He also suggested he was merely “indulging” her by speaking to her at the event.
Meloni said she was “astonished” by the remarks and insisted they were “completely made up.” She expressed disappointment over what she described as repeated disrespect towards close allies of the United States.
Her comments come after a visible shift in tone between the two leaders, who had shown signs of easing earlier tensions during the G7 summit in France. Video footage from the event showed both leaders engaged in a brief conversation.
Trump’s remarks, however, have triggered fresh strain in ties. He told La7 TV that he “didn’t have to talk” to Meloni and suggested she was fortunate to have the exchange.
Meloni responded by questioning Trump’s attitude towards allies, saying he shows more leniency toward adversaries of the West than friendly nations.
Italian FM cancels US visit
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also reacted strongly, cancelling a planned US visit and calling Trump’s comments “grave and offensive” to Italy.
Meloni was previously seen as a close supporter of Trump and attended his 2025 inauguration. However, relations have cooled in recent months amid disagreements over foreign policy, including the Iran conflict and NATO commitments.
Trump has since escalated criticism, accusing Meloni of failing to support US positions and even threatening adjustments to American troop presence in Italy.
