Middle East tension; PM Shehbaz lands in Saudi Arabia for emergency talks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reached Saudi Arabia on Thursday for a brief emergency visit, set to hold high-level talks with Saudi leaders.

He was welcomed at the Royal Terminal of Jeddah International Airport by the Deputy Governor of the Makkah Region, Pakistani Ambassador to Riyadh, Ahmed Farooq and a team of diplomatic officials.

The short trip underscores Pakistan’s active engagement in regional diplomacy and its ongoing efforts to support peace and security in the region.

During the visit, Prime Minister Sharif is scheduled to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the current regional situation, bilateral relations and matters of regional security. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister will return to Pakistan.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office emphasised that the visit highlights Pakistan’s proactive role in regional diplomacy and underlines the country’s commitment to promoting peace and stability through dialogue.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi weekly briefing

Earlier, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hassan Andrabi noted during the weekly briefing that Prime Minister Sharif left for Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is accompanying him on the visit.

According to the Foreign Office, the trip is part of ongoing close bilateral consultations on peace and security issues in the region. Pakistan will continue its efforts toward de-escalation, ceasefire, dialogue and diplomacy.

Pakistan is playing a constructive role in de-escalating current tensions in the Middle East, the Foreign Office Spokesperson reiterated.

Andrabi emphasised that Pakistan’s principled stance, rooted in respect for sovereignty, international law, the UN Charter, and diplomacy, is recognised and respected across regional capitals. This, he said, enables Pakistan to serve as a channel of communication between key countries in the region.
