Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has clarified the incident involving captain Salman Ali Agha, stating that the skipper’s reaction during the match was misunderstood.
While addressing a press conference, Hesson said Salman did not throw a bottle out of anger during a conversation with him. Instead, he explained that the captain’s frustration came after the dismissal of Khawaja Nafay at a crucial stage of the game.
Regarding versatility of Usman Tariq
Hesson emphasised that team decisions are being made with balance in mind.
He highlighted the versatility of Usman Tariq, stating he is effective in both attacking and defensive roles.
He also praised Mohammad Nawaz for his excellent performances over the past year and noted that Shadab Khan has performed well since making his return.
The head coach maintained that the best possible team has been selected for every match.
He described Salman Mirza as unlucky to miss out after the first game despite performing strongly since coming into the side. Hesson added that fast bowler Naseem Shah could be included in the playing XI when conditions are favourable.
Addressing individual performances, Hesson backed Saim Ayub, saying a couple of low scores would not define him as he has performed well previously and is contributing with the ball in the tournament.
Babar Azam’s role
On Babar Azam’s role, Hesson said the former captain understands his responsibilities within the team. He noted that Babar’s strike rate in the power play has been below 200, which is not the role the team expects from him.
However, he pointed out that Babar had improved his strike rate in the match against the United States and has been brought back after the Asia Cup to fulfil a specific role.
Hesson further explained that in the previous match, it was not ideal to send Babar in to bat after 12 overs had already been bowled, as there are situations where other players are better suited to take on that responsibility.
