Monsoon to begin July 1, first spell to hit Punjab and AJK

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the arrival of the monsoon season from July 1, with the first spell expected to affect northeastern Pakistan, including Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

According to PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir, rainfall is likely in northern Pakistan and northeastern Punjab as the monsoon system begins moving into the country.

He said there are currently no signs of the monsoon reaching Sindh, and no significant rainfall is expected in the province until July 5.

Speaking about Karachi’s weather, Anjum Nazir said that a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal could bring rain to parts of Sindh, including Karachi. However, rainfall in Sindh, including Karachi, is expected to remain below normal during the current monsoon season. He also noted that India received 43 per cent less rainfall than normal during June.

On the other hand, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert regarding the potential eruption of glacial lakes in the upper districts.

The PDMA has expressed concern over the rapid melting of glaciers in these regions due to rising temperatures and intense heat.

According to the PDMA, instructions have been issued to the district administrations of Upper Swat, Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra to take preventive measures.

The authority further stated that administrations in sensitive glacial areas have been directed to remain on high alert and continue close monitoring. Rescue agencies, machinery, and emergency personnel have also been instructed to stay fully prepared at all times.
