Federal Minister for Health and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, Mustafa Kamal, has made demands for Karachi to be placed under federal control and to abolish the 18th Amendment, on Thursday.
Karachi’s Gul Plaza fire
In view of the Gul Plaza tragedy that struck Karachi earlier, Mustafa Kamal laid emphasis on the civic responsibility of MQM-P. He added that his party believes in fulfilling all responsibilities.
He further expressed reservations about the current Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government questioned inaction and delays.
While addressing the press conference, he said the city’s management continues to fail its people through neglect.
In the event of an objection against the Sindh government, MQM is repeatedly accused of orchestrating incidents. Such as the Baldia factory tragedy and “gunny bag killings”, he added further.
18th Amendment
The MQM leader expressed strong disapproval of the 18th Amendment, which devolves powers to the provinces.
“The 18th Amendment is creating problems for the country instead of benefits, and the powers granted under it are not being used for the welfare of citizens,” he said.
He further expressed frustration over why PPP had not been held accountable over the last 2 decades.
The current system disintegrated because the PPP was granted unchecked power and control to ensure that the federal government stays in power, according to him. He asked the state how many more lives needed to be sacrificed to keep the system intact.
The federal minister stressed the importance of Articles 148 and 149. Which were included in the Constitution by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
He said that matters should be referred to the federal government since the provincial government has failed to deliver.
While considering the devastation caused by the Gul Plaza fire, Mustafa Kamal called for federal intervention since law and order could not be maintained by the ruling government.
He further alleged that the PPP leadership would block funds when the MQM received them from the Prime Minister in the past.
Mustafa Kamal accused the Sindh Chief Minister of committing acts of ‘domestic terrorism’. And called for an end to the plight of the people of Karachi.
He hoped the government of Pakistan would take appropriate action in the best interests of the people.
