A local court in Multan has approved the physical remand of a suspect accused of chasing and running over a 15-year-old orphan boy with his car at a private housing society, according to reports.
The victim, identified as Waseem, lived at an orphanage operated by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). Police said the suspect, Tauqeer, had been arrested and a murder case registered against him in connection with the incident.
Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq said the orphanage administration had sent Waseem to Tauqeer’s house seven days earlier to learn a trade. Tauqeer, who carried out electrical work at various buildings, was reportedly training the teenager to become an electrician.
According to police, the boy left the job, prompting the suspect to allegedly chase him in his car. CCTV footage reportedly shows the teenager running away before being struck by the vehicle.
Police said initial investigations had found no evidence that Waseem was involved in theft.
Orphanage staff questioned
As part of the investigation, police have detained some members of the orphanage administration for questioning. Farooq said children from the institution had previously been sent to the suspect for vocational training.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding Waseem’s placement with Tauqeer and the events that led to the teenager’s death. Police have also registered a murder case against the suspect.
Teen buried in Muzaffargarh
Waseem originally belonged to Muzaffargarh. Following the incident, his uncle and maternal uncle took his body to his native area.
His funeral prayer was held in Daultpur village, where he was laid to rest in the local ancestral graveyard. According to reports, only close relatives and orphanage officials attended the funeral.
The funeral was held promptly due to the condition of the body, the reports added.
