NEPRA announces nationwide electricity price increase

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased electricity prices by 28 paisa per unit across Pakistan under the December fuel price adjustment, according to official reports on Friday.

According to the details, NEPRA has issued a notification confirming that the new rates will be applied to the electricity bills for February.

The increase will affect consumers of all major power distribution companies across the country.

The price hike will also apply to the general consumers. However, lifeline tariff users and electric vehicle charging stations have been exempted and will not face the price increase.

NEPRA said the adjustment is part of the monthly fuel cost mechanism. This reflects changes in fuel prices used for power generation.

As a result, both domestic and commercial users will see a slight rise in their electricity bills.

The authority further added that such changes are made regularly and are announced in advance to keep consumers informed, according to the reports.

Earlier, NEPRA introduced new rules for net metering consumers under the NEPRA Prosumer Regulations 2025.

Under these regulations, different tariffs will apply for electricity purchased from net metering users and electricity supplied to them.

Power distribution companies will buy electricity from net metering consumers at the National Average Energy Purchase Price. While the electricity provided to these consumers will be charged at normal consumer rates.

What does “prosumer” mean?

NEPRA has also introduced the term “prosumer” for consumers who both generate and use electricity.

The regulations state that consumers will not be allowed to generate power beyond their approved load.

Additionally, NEPRA will have the authority to review its generation capacity when needed.
