Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has introduced a plan to connect Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib to the motorway network of the country for promoting religious tourism and improvement of the region.

During a briefing, the minister asked the National Highway Authority to commence the work for Sialkot-Kartarpur motorway, which is going to be named as Guru Nanak Expressway.

He said that the project is aimed at availing modern travel facilities to pilgrims visiting the sacred Sikh sites.

Aleem Khan had announced that hotels of international standards including those of 3/4/5 star will be set up on the route for accommodation of the visitors.

He also ordered the NHA to build modern rest areas and commercial centers to enhance the ease of traveling.

To draw the attention of overseas investors, the government is planning to market the project during international roadshows and marketing campaigns in UK, Canada and the United States, with the focus on the Sikh diaspora around the world.

Calling the initiative a big achievement, the federal minister said the expressway will provide economic opportunities and connectivity to adjacent towns like Narang Mandi and Badu Malhi, one of the factors that contribute to long-term growth for the area.

The project is now expected to be completed by the end of April after the Punjab Planning and Development Board approves the revised PC-I which escalates the cost to Rs53 billion.

The revised PC-I accounts for the construction of the Thalian Interchange flood mitigation measures and higher construction material costs. The Frontier Works Organisation will begin work on the interchange once the PC-I is approved.
