ISLAMABAD: As January 1, 2026 nears, Pakistan prepares for New Year celebrations with cultural colour, fireworks and gatherings while traffic police of major cities have announced traffic plans for public relief.
Across the country, people from different backgrounds welcome the New Year under the Gregorian calendar. The day remains an optional holiday. Most offices and markets will remain open.
For those planning celebrations, several cities are offering public events and fireworks.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi:
- Giga Mall in DHA Phase II will host a large fireworks display on December 31. Families are expected to gather in big numbers.
- Bahria Town Rawalpindi’s Eiffel Tower will feature fireworks and live music, a regular attraction every year.
- Park View City Islamabad will hold a family festival with light shows, 3D mapping, fireworks, music, and food stalls. Live performances by Sahir Ali Bagga, Falak Shabbir, Abbas brother and DJ Sahil Ejaz.
- Dera Daari Islamabad will offer fireworks alongside fine dining and city views late at night.
Islamabad Traffic Police have issued a traffic plan for New Year Night to ensure smooth movement and public convenience.
Under the plan, over 350 traffic officers and personnel will be deployed on major roads and key points across the capital.
Authorities said heavy traffic entry into Islamabad will remain completely suspended from 7pm on December 31 till 3am.
Traffic police warned of possible congestion due to New Year events on Islamabad Expressway, Jinnah Avenue, Srinagar Highway, Club Road, Murree Road and Park Road.
Traffic pressure is also expected at Zero Point, Jinnah Avenue Flyover, Khanna and the PWD underpass.
Special traffic contingents will be deployed at recreational and entertainment spots.
Karachi
- Bahria Town Karachi is expected to host a major fireworks show, often termed the city’s biggest by organisers.
- Baradari Park’s Rang De Karachi event will feature qawwali, jamming, and fireworks. It has continued since 2020.
- Gorakh Hill will attract visitors seeking scenic views and cool weather celebrations.
Clifton Beach and Sea View will see families and youth welcoming the New Year by the sea.
As Karachiites plan for the New Year festivities, the police officials have announced that the infamous Sea View will remain open on New Year’s Night.
According to police spokesperson, three roads leading to the Sea View will remain open. Karachi residents are advised to use Khayaban e Ittehad, Abdullah Shah Ghazi Tomb and Bilawal Chowrangi Road to reach Sea View.
Earlier, Police announced that drones will be used to curb aerial firing in Karachi on New Year’s night in the port city.
Lahore:
Lahore, known as the heart of Pakistan, adds its unique touch to New Year celebrations.
The Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, illuminate the city for a mesmerizing backdrop to the festivities.
Additionally, Pearl Continental Hotel, Avari Hotel, Bahria Town Lahore, and Marriott Hotel Lahore offer enthusiastic celebrations for a memorable New Year’s Eve.
Lahore City Traffic Police has finalised traffic arrangements for New Year’s night. The plan aims to ensure smooth flow and public safety across the city.
Under zonal and divisional officers, 20 DSPs are deployed. More than 1,400 inspectors and wardens will perform duties at key points.
The Traffic Response Unit will stay on alert. It will act against illegal parking and traffic violations.
Extra staff are posted at major junctions and flyovers. These include Azadi Flyover, Liberty Chowk and Defence Main Boulevard.
Traffic police presence will increase on Mall Road, Jail Road and Canal Road. Main Boulevard Gulberg will also remain under close monitoring.
