NEW YORK: A winter storm brought the season’s first snowfall to the New York City area, blanketing streets and parks with several inches.
The heaviest totals were recorded on Long Island and in parts of New Jersey, where more than 6 inches of snow fell in some locations, with reports of up to 8 inches in certain areas.
Winter Storm Winds Down
Snowfall began tapering off late Sunday morning across most of the region, though it persisted longer on Long Island, clearing around 2 p.m.
As the storm moved out, winds picked up with gusts reaching 25-35 mph at times. Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply in the evening, leading to wind chills in the single digits or even below zero.
The combination of falling temperatures and an incoming arctic blast raises concerns for slick and hazardous road conditions overnight into Monday, with potential icing on surfaces. Drivers are advised to exercise caution.
Rain and snowfall in Pakistan
Rain and snowfall are expected in several parts of Pakistan as the country moves into the second half of December, bringing colder weather to many regions.
Islamabad and its surrounding areas are expected to remain cloudy from today, with intermittent rain likely over the coming days.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rain is expected in the plains, while moderate to heavy snowfall is likely in the hilly and mountainous regions. The upper areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and the mountainous parts of AJK may also experience intense snowfall, which could affect road connectivity and daily routines.
Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, and other northwestern areas, is likely to receive light rain, while snowfall is expected in higher elevations. In the plains, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated, whereas snowfall will continue intermittently in elevated and northern regions.
NDMA advisory
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory to ensure public safety.
Authorities warned that due to snowfall, slippery road conditions may prevail in hilly areas, potentially affecting traffic flow and leading to temporary road closures at some locations.
Authorities also expect fog intensity to increase, particularly during morning and night hours.
The NDMA urged tourists and travellers to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous areas during this period and advised local administrations to remain vigilant. Citizens have been encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions and take precautionary measures to minimise risks associated with adverse weather.
