Nida breaks silence on parents funding adult children, sparks online debate

Renowned television host Nida Yasir has sparked a debate on social media after criticising the culture of financially supporting married children and urging parents to encourage young people to become self-reliant.

A clip of Nida Yasir is going viral on social media in which she said that parents in Pakistan should encourage their children to become self-reliant and only consider marriage once they are capable of earning and supporting themselves.

The host said that in Western countries, many children start working at a young age, and by the time they turn 18, they often manage their own expenses, including rent, education, and other household costs.

Nida said that the situation is different in Pakistan, where parents continue to support their children for as long as they can. She described the system as being reversed, saying that in some cases, either a young child who is barely old enough to understand responsibilities is forced to support an entire family, or an adult in his 40s or 50s continues to depend on his father’s income.

She added that this trend in Pakistan needs to change gradually. According to her, parents should focus not only on providing education and meeting their children’s expenses but also on helping them become independent and capable of building a better future. She emphasised that parents’ responsibility is not just to provide degrees and financial support, but also to guide their children toward independence and help them succeed in life.
