Bangladesh confirms one Nipah virus death

Nipah virus

A middle-aged woman has died after contracting the Nipah virus in Bangladesh.

She was admitted to the hospital on January 28th.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed the case.

“On 3 February 2026, the International Health Regulations National Focal Point (IHR NFP) for Bangladesh notified WHO of one confirmed case of Nipah virus (NiV) infection in Rajshahi Division,” the international health organisation said in a statement.

All 35 people who had contact with the patient are being monitored and have tested negative for the virus, and no further cases have been detected to date, the WHO said.

Last year, four laboratory-confirmed fatal cases were reported in Bangladesh.

Nipah virus cases in India

India has also reported Nipah virus cases this year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, death may occur in 40 per cent to 75 per cent of all cases.

It is pertinent to mention that there is no vaccine for this virus as of yet.

The best way to prevent this virus is to avoid sick animals, especially in areas where outbreaks are common. Since it spreads from person to person, you should also avoid people who have the virus unless you’re taking proper precautions and using infection control practices.
