ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan coming down hard on the misuse of National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) personnel, revealed that lower-rank staff were being employed as barbers, cooks and attendants at officers’ residences instead of performing their official duties.
Chairing a performance review meeting of the NHMP, Aleem Khan expressed strong dissatisfaction and ordered the immediate withdrawal of all such personnel from officers’ homes. “Police officers must focus on public service, not personal comfort,” he remarked.
The minister said the force must dedicate itself to road safety and crime prevention, stressing that its credibility was being undermined by such practices.
Aleem Khan also reviewed enforcement policies, directing strict action against overspeeding. He said motorists exceeding 120 km/h would be fined, while those driving above 150 km/h would face criminal proceedings and registration of FIRs.
The minister also reviewed proposals to outsource vehicle fitness inspections and introduce electronic monitoring systems similar to those in developed countries and instructed for devising plans to curb crimes on the motorway.
Issuing a one-week deadline for visible improvement, Aleem Khan warned of strict action in case of failure. He said efficiency and accountability would determine future incentives for the force.
“Holding office is not a privilege but a responsibility to serve the nation,” the minister remarked.
