Oliver Peake century helps Australia lead West Indies

Oliver Peake century Australia

A classy century from Oliver Peake helped Australia reach the total of 314 against the West Indies on Wednesday, finishing their innings at the final warm-up match before the World Cup semi-finals in Harare. West Indies need 315 runs to win the match.

Australia was asked to bat first as the West Indies won the toss. Australia made early use of favourable batting conditions despite movement with the new ball on a slow surface.

Peake innings

Captain Oliver Peake steadied the innings with a calm and controlled knock. The 19-year-old played patiently early before building momentum through sharp running and well-placed shots.

Peake reached his second youth one-day international century, scoring heavily through the off side and finishing as Australia’s top scorer. He struck nine fours and one six, bringing up his hundred with a clean hit over long-on.

He shared important partnerships with Nitesh Samuel and wicketkeeper Alex Lee-Young, allowing Australia to maintain a steady scoring rate through the middle overs.

Fast start from Malajczuk

Opener Will Malajczuk set the tone with an aggressive start at the top of the order. The right-hander struck 10 boundaries in a quick 30-ball innings, driving confidently through the off side and punishing anything loose.

He took some risks early on and rode his luck at times before his innings ended when he miscued a wide delivery and was caught in the deep. Malajczuk’s dismissal left Australia at one for 58.

Seamer R’Jai Gittens then removed Steve Hogan soon after, with Australia slipping to two for 84 after 11 overs.

Support from middle order

Samuel contributed 56 from 74 balls, continuing his consistent tournament form, while Lee-Young added 45 from 47 deliveries with positive intent.

Peake was run out on the final ball of the innings while pushing for a second run, as Australia closed on 314.

The total gives Australia confidence heading into the semi-finals, with both their top order and middle order showing form at the right time.
