Islamabad: Residents of One Constitution Avenue apartments served eviction orders

residents of One constitution avenue served eviction notice

Residents of one of the most prime and expensive apartments of Islamabad, the twin towers of One Constitution Avenue, have been told to evacuate the premises without any prior notification causing panic amongst the families.

As per reports, Islamabad Capital Territory police in a large number gathered outside the One Constitution Ave building and went door to door asking the occupants to evacuate the building by today.

Families living in the building expressed fear and uncertainty after the sudden operation. Residents said they were told an “order from above” had been issued, directing them to vacate the property within 12 hours.

The security personnel and police neither presented a court order nor shared any legal documents or explanation and simply ordered them to vacate the premises by 12 noon, the residents said.

The building has remained embroiled in legal disputes for more than two decades. During this period, courts allowed people to purchase apartments, invest their savings and rent out properties legally. Residents and tenants said they exercised their property and tenancy rights in good faith.

They questioned how authorities could suddenly order evacuations without prior notice, a hearing or a clear explanation.

Residents also criticised the late-night operation, asking what kind of court order would permit dozens of armed policemen to enter a residential building at 1am and treat law-abiding citizens like criminals.

Built on a 13-acre plot along Constitution Avenue, the building has remained under controversy over alleged violations of lease terms.

The operation was launched after the Islamabad High Court upheld the Capital Development Authority decision to cancel the lease of the iconic One Constitution Avenue over multi-billion-rupee payment defaults.

Regarding apartment buyers, the Capital Development Authority argued that their legal status is linked to the main leaseholder. The authority said claims of legitimate ownership involve factual disputes that should be decided by a competent legal forum.

The authority also stated that delays in completing the project deprived the capital of a planned five-star hotel for nearly two decades, causing difficulties during official visits and major diplomatic engagements.
