OpenAI Launches Google Chrome Rival, ChatGPT Atlas

OpenAI ChatGPT Atlas

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, an artificial intelligence-powered web browser built around its popular chatbot, aiming to transform how people browse the internet and challenge Google Chrome’s dominance in the market.

A new browser with added features

OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Atlas on Tuesday, describing it as a browser designed to make the internet more interactive and intelligent.

Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas integrates ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience, allowing users to summarise pages and perform tasks without leaving the tab.

Users will see an “Ask ChatGPT” button on every webpage, opening a sidebar where they can chat, ask questions, or get real-time help on their browsing content.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Atlas represents a “once in a decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be,” highlighting the company’s ambition to redefine traditional web experience.

Smart features and multiple personalization option

Atlas comes with a built-in memory system that learns from user behavior over time, offering a more personalized browsing experience.

For example, users can search their web history using natural language prompts like “find that document about Atlas core design.”

The browser also includes an “agent mode,” where ChatGPT can take actions as Agentic AI such as booking flights, shopping online, completing entire tasks for users.

Rising competition in AI browsing particularly with Google Chrome

The launch of Atlas puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google products. Google recently embedded its Gemini AI model into Chrome.

Moreover, following OpenAI’s announcement, Alphabet shares dropped by about 2%.

ChatGPT Atlas is currently available globally only for macOS users, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon.

OpenAI said that the agent mode will be available only for Plus and Pro subscribers, with more updates planned in the coming days.
