NEW YORK: The permanent representative for Pakistan to the United Nations (UN), Asim Iftikhar, claimed that Afghanistan has intensified its operations against Pakistan.
While addressing the Security Council, Asim said that Afghanistan has once again become a haven for terrorism, currently housing more than 6000 militants.
He recalled the Afghan Taliban’s commitment not to use their soil for terrorism, yet they are continuously breaching the promise.
This success has, therefore, cost a lot to brave Pakistani forces and citizens who have tried to fight this menace.
Pakistan has already demanded that effective measures be taken by the current Afghan regime.
The permanent representative emphasised the importance of cooperation in ensuring that there is peace in the regions. He cautioned that a lack of action by the international community will promote extremism.
The representative insisted that the Taliban should be answerable to the world community. He demanded verification systems to check on them.
Pakistan still requires a sustainable approach to cross-border terrorism. Finally, Mr Iftikhar stressed that the stability of the region could be achieved through a strong reaction.
His speech raised the grave security situation to the immediate attention of the council.
