Web desk: The AFC Asian Cup Qualifier between Pakistan and Afghanistan, scheduled for October 9 in Islamabad, is teetering on the brink of cancellation due to a major visa delay for the Afghan national team.
The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) has formally complained. Citing that despite sending an initial list on September 18, their players, many of whom are based overseas, have not received visas.
The AFF warned that this would force the team to play without vital preparation and training.
In contrast, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) asserts the delay stems from the AFF’s procedural errors. Including a late visa application on September 27.
This late submission violates AFC rules requiring visas 30 days before the match.
Currently, only three players and ten officials have received visas. The PFF has informed the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and is working to secure visa-on-arrival for the remaining players.
“This qualifier is very important for the growth of football in both countries,” PFF Acting Secretary Shahid Khokhar stated, hoping that the matter will be resolved soon.
However, officials are also prepared to request a walkover victory, citing the AFF’s administrative failure.
The AFC is weighing both the rescheduling and walkover options. Leaving the fate of the crucial regional fixture uncertain just days before kick-off.
According to the Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), the AFF noted that the delay has severely affected its plans.
The federation stated that players of the Afghan national football team are set to travel to Pakistan from various countries, including those in Europe, as well as Australia, the United States, Canada, and parts of Asia.
The federation warned that if the visas are issued at the last minute, Afghan players will be forced to face the host team without adequate training or preparation.
Afghanistan is placed in Group “A” of the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers alongside Pakistan, Syria, and Myanmar.
The Afghan team has already suffered defeats against Syria and Myanmar in its previous matches.
